Dave Hill has been a big inspiration to me since I first got into photography. He is one of the photographers who truly set the bar for both photographic creativity, lighting and post processing. The photo above is my personal favorite of his collection to date. With so much detail and spot on lighting, this is truly a masterwork in the art of photography. I among others would love to learn his techniques and perhaps in the future he will throw a photographic bone to calm our seething interest in his world of true magic.

In the video below, we are able to peek behind the scenes of a photo shoot for his "Adventure" collection. This nice less than five minute video will take you on set of the shoot for the image above Taking notes on light set ups and technique as he shoots will shed a little light on the process but just enough to get your own creative juices flowing. There are some other behind the scenes videos of his worth checking out as well, so keep an eye out on Youtube for those.
There is no shortage of Photoshop tutorials on the "Dave Hill Effect" around the web. Everything from selective HDR masking and high pass layers to saturation and mid contrast boosting. It all looks like it is slightly inspired by Mr. Hill himself but I have yet to see anyone light, compose and post process quite like him.

His style is highly sought after and for very good reason. When you see
one of his photographs it is very obvious it stands out of the crowd in a
big way. Working alongside names like these, he has proven time and time
again that he is capable of not only creating a memorable image but he
is able to truly bring out the feeling of that musician's style in the
photograph. Every finished product seems to mesh perfectly with the
style of music he is shooting for.

Whether you are a photographer yourself or just a person who enjoys great photography, there is plenty to see and much to be admired in his online portfolio. I highly recommend spending some time studying his amazing photographs and really understand the complexity of what he produces.
